Mason Mount is yet to agree on a new deal with Chelsea amid speculation of him joining Manchester United or Liverpool in the summer
Potter understands that Mason Mount’s contract negotiations with Chelsea must prioritize what is best for the player. Mount has been linked with a move away from the club due to his recent lack of playing time.
The midfielder’s current contract with Chelsea expires at the end of next season. Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, and Newcastle United are among the teams said to be interested in him.
Potter concedes that Mount might have doubts over a renewal
While Potter previously urged for a quick resolution to the talks, he now acknowledges that Mount may need time to make a decision.
“Ultimately it is between the club and Mason,” Potter said on Friday. “I have spoken to him numerous times about his situation, football and life generally.
“My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly, but sometimes these things happen.
“They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it. let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.
“I am not naive. I know it is an important time for him and an important contract. These things have to be right for him and his family. It’s important he makes a decision on that basis.”
Mount has featured in 32 games for Chelsea this season, with 26 of those being starts. He has scored six goals, which is only surpassed by Raheem Sterling (10) and Kai Havertz (eight), in a lackluster campaign for the Blues.
