Man City eye a shock move for Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen in January

Manchester City are considering a potential January transfer for Chelsea youngster left-back Ian Maatsen.

According to Planet Sport, City is closely observing the contract status of the 21-year-old Dutch defender. Maatsen spent the previous season on loan at Burnley and has one year left on his Chelsea contract.

Chelsea was willing to offload Ian Maatsen during the summer and purportedly reached an agreement for a loan with a £31.5 million ($39 million) purchase option with Burnley.

However, the young player declined the opportunity to return to Vincent Kompany’s team and expressed his intention to remain at Stamford Bridge for the current season.

Chelsea is eager to secure Maatsen’s contract, as Mauricio Pochettino has fielded him in four matches this season, while using fellow left-back Marc Cucurella only once. Meanwhile, City has been without a left-back for some time.

Therefore, if Pep Guardiola contacts Ian Maatsen, it would be intriguing to hear his response. The two Premier League powerhouses have engaged in a considerable amount of transfer activity in recent times, with Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling relocating to London, while Mateo Kovacic moved north during the summer.
