Postecoglou wants to follow the blueprint of Jurgen Klopp at Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou believes the long-term approach adopted by Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp serves as a blueprint for success at the club.

Both Spurs and Liverpool, unbeaten and in strong early-season form, will face each other in a live match on Sky Sports’ Saturday Night Football.

Postecoglou, however, has emphasized that it will take time for his methods to yield results, suggesting earlier this month that it may require at least two more transfer windows or even longer to mold the squad according to his vision.

Klopp secured his first trophy with Liverpool, the 2019 Champions League, in his fourth season, defeating Tottenham in the final. Postecoglou believes this illustrates that patience can be rewarded in football.

“We look at Liverpool, Arsenal, even Brighton now – there’s a plan there that they’ve stuck to,” said Postecoglou. “It hasn’t brought short-term success if you look at the trajectory of those teams.

“They’ve believed in something and allowed it to grow. They all had a different way to do it, with different managers with different levels of experience.

“There are definitely lessons there, but you look over the course of time – teams who have dominated over longer periods have normally had a plan or ideology to follow and they’ve stuck to it.

“It’s not easy, because short-term results mean pressure and scrutiny and some clubs buckle under that. Liverpool’s short-term success didn’t come straight away, but they saw if they backed Jurgen they’d reap the rewards.”

Postecoglou, who mentioned that Spurs will be missing the injured Brennan Johnson for the upcoming weekend and will need to assess James Maddison and Heung-min Son closer to the match, also commended Klopp for elevating the Premier League’s tempo “to a higher level.”
