Klopp on VAR controversy: I am over it

Jurgen Klopp opted not to criticize VAR despite the fact that it did not suggest a red card for Brighton’s Pascal Gross.

Pascal Gross conceded a penalty in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool for bringing down Dominik Szoboszlai. However, surprisingly, he escaped receiving a yellow card.

There were calls for Gross to be shown a red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. But VAR did not intervene to recommend his dismissal.

This contentious decision comes just a week after Liverpool experienced a remarkable VAR mix-up. That mistake resulted in a Luis Diaz goal being incorrectly disallowed for offside. In response to that incident, the refereeing body PGMOL released the audio recordings of the conversations related to the decision, leading to a change in protocol for such determinations.

However, despite the incident against Brighton, Jurgen Klopp chose not to criticize the VAR system for the second consecutive week.

“I saw it was a penalty and didn’t think about red. I heard now it is about goalscoring opportunity.” Klopp said at a press conference. “If it is a goalscoring opportunity, we can ask the question here: what do you think, was it a goalscoring opportunity? Hands up. I didn’t see it back… we have a few hands up, by the way! But what can I say about that? I am over it, I am too old for these kind of things. We will not change it anymore.”

Liverpool will resume Premier League action on October 21 with a home fixture against Everton.
