Arsenal may get the upper hand on Barcelona in pursuit of Antwerp’s Arthur Vermeeren

Arsenal are interested in securing the services of Arthur Vermeeren and they appear to have taken the lead in the race to sign him next summer.

Reports indicate that Barcelona is planning to recruit a new defensive midfielder next summer, ideally a young player capable of naturally succeeding Oriol Romeu.

Arthur Vermeeren, who currently plays for Royal Antwerp, is on their list of potential recruits. But they will likely encounter stiff competition, including from Arsenal. According to SPORT, the Gunners are currently leading the pursuit to secure the midfielder’s signature.

Arsenal could potentially acquire the Belgian player for as little as €20 million (£17 million). If Barcelona’s financial situation improves in the coming months, they may also be in a position to match this offer.

However, recent indications suggest they have redirected their attention more towards Gabriel Moscardo, an 18-year-old player from Corinthians.

Vermeeren is currently representing the Belgian national team and marked his official debut in their 3-2 victory against Austria in the Euro qualifiers. His upcoming match is against Sweden on Monday, October 16.
