Sandro Tonali’s agent admits the Italian has a gambling problem

The agent of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali confessed that the Italian is grappling with a gambling addiction.

Italian investigators are currently examining suspicious betting activity in which Tonali, along with Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo, has been interviewed by the police regarding alleged betting violations.

Prosecutors have also mentioned Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli, who was subsequently banned for seven months. Tonali attended the Italian Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday, and there is speculation that he might face a global football ban if found guilty.

Giuseppe Riso, Tonali’s agent, has publicly acknowledged that his client is struggling with addiction during an event at the Italian embassy.

He said: “He is playing his most important game – against betting addiction. He’s in shock, he’s very sad. He has to face this situation. And He is training at the moment (at Newcastle).

“He told me he trained very well. He can play Saturday.”

Tonali is still eligible to play for Newcastle, but his status may change as the investigation unfolds. He won’t be part of the squad for Italy’s match against England on Tuesday. He left the team due to his police interview.
