Chelsea 0-2 Brentford: Pochettino’s men still not out of the woods

Chelsea’s difficult start to the 2023/24 season continued as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Brentford in the west London derby at Stamford Bridge.

The Bees have now won all three of their visits to Chelsea since being promoted to the Premier League, and they have moved ahead of their local rivals into tenth place in the league.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea side faced boos from the fans at full-time, and they have work to do ahead of their upcoming league match against high-flying Tottenham Hotspur.

In the 10th minute, Chelsea came close to taking the lead when Noni Madueke had space to run behind Vitaly Janelt, who was covering for the out-of-position Aaron Hickey. Madueke cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, striking the underside of the crossbar.

Conor Gallagher also attempted a long-range shot, forcing Brentford’s Mark Flekken into a low save. Chelsea missed another opportunity when Cole Palmer delivered a fantastic cross for Marc Cucurella, but his volley went straight to the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Brentford created their first notable chance, with Kristoffer Ajer advancing and delivering a cross for Vitaly Janelt.

On the 58th minute, Brentford took the lead against the run of play. Chelsea switched off from a Brentford throw, allowing Bryan Mbeumo to cross for Ethan Pinnock, who nodded the ball into the net at the back post.

Chelsea pushed forward in search of an equalizer late in the game but struggled to create clear chances. Thiago Silva’s header across the face of the goal from a Conor Gallagher corner went unconverted.

Substitute Deivid Washington was denied from close range, and Brentford missed an opportunity to seal the game on the counter. In added time, Brentford converted their second goal as Neal Maupay set up Mbeumo for an easy finish into an empty net.
