Thiago Silva hints at retirement plans after Chelsea contract ends

Thiago Silva, whose contract with Chelsea is set to expire next summer, has dropped hints indicating that he might be approaching retirement.

The Brazilian defender initially joined the Blues as a short-term solution in 2020 but has since become an integral part of their defense. However, as his contract nears its end, the 39-year-old is contemplating whether his future in the game will extend beyond 2024.

He told Sky Italia: “The end of my career is approaching and it’s not a simple thing. I have to think if I stop, or if I continue and where I go: there’s the family, I have two sons who play at Chelsea.

“At the moment it’s I take this opportunity to play and make the most of this last year of my contract at Chelsea. But I’m very happy and proud of the career I’ve had, of what I’m doing now at 39 years old.

“I have prepared all my life to make the most of my work: football is my passion. Surely after I retire I will continue in this world, I don’t know how yet.”

Despite the turmoil witnessed at Stamford Bridge in recent seasons, which involved Roman Abramovich’s departure as owner and the turbulent tenure of his successor Todd Boehly, Silva has stood out as one of the few positives for the club during that period.

Looking ahead, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Levi Colwill will assume responsibility for Chelsea’s defense in the foreseeable future. However, if the former Paris Saint-Germain star decides to retire at the end of the season, it will be a significant loss for the west London team. Silva’s contributions have been highly regarded, and he could potentially be remembered as a legend of the game.
