Pochettino explains why Nkunku was left on the bench

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino clarified the decision to keep Christopher Nkunku on the bench during the victory over Sheffield United.

Mauricio Pochettino, aged 51, emphasized that he chose not to take any chances with the former RB Leipzig forward, considering Nkunku had recently returned to full fitness after a significant injury.

After the triumph over Sheffield United, Pochettino shared the rationale behind Christopher Nkunku’s absence from the pitch during the entire match.

Pochettino told BBC Sport about Nkunku: “We didn’t want to take a risk with him and give him more time for his recovery.”

Nkunku, acquired by Chelsea in a transfer valued at £52 million ($65 million) in the summer, has not featured in a Premier League game for his new team due to a knee injury sustained in the preseason. While Pochettino suggested before the Sheffield United match that Nkunku might be part of the action at Stamford Bridge, the chance did not come to fruition.

“It’s a big motivation for us, for his team-mates, and the fans to see a player that should be important for us being in the squad for the first time,” he said. “It’s very good news for us and it’s time to be calm and quiet because we don’t want to put the pressure on him.”

The Chelsea manager aims for his team to capitalize on the victory against Sheffield United this weekend, gearing up for a hectic Christmas schedule that includes matches against Newcastle, Wolves, Crystal Palace, and Luton Town.
