Manchester United opts against extending Raphael Varane’s contract

Manchester United has opted not to extend Raphael Varane’s contract at the club, and there’s a possibility that he could explore potential exits in the upcoming summer transfer window.

As per the Daily Mail, the decision has been made by the Red Devils not to activate the option to extend Varane‘s contract by 12 months. This choice leaves the French defender free to engage in discussions about potential transfers with foreign clubs in the new year.

Back in November, amidst rumors suggesting a possible fallout between Varane and Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, the Dutch manager swiftly played down the speculated discord.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ten Hag said. “It’s rumours. Very important player, but there’s internal competition and there should be at a top club, as we are.”

The 30-year-old’s current contract is slated to conclude in the summer after he initially joined the club in a £34 million ($44 million) deal from Real Madrid in 2021. Although Manchester United has chosen not to extend Varane’s stay under his existing terms, there are purportedly ongoing discussions about retaining him at the club with a reduced salary.

According to the report, United considers his current contract, valued at around £340,000-per-week, as ‘difficult to justify’ due to his injury issues, which have restricted him to only seven Premier League appearances this season.

Despite having a restricted role this season, Manchester United faces a shortage in the center-back department and is anticipated to rely on Varane in the upcoming new year. This need arises as they gear up for an FA Cup encounter against Wigan Athletic and a challenging league fixture against Tottenham.
