Arteta claims Arsenal haven’t contacted PGMOL over rough treatment of Bukayo Saka

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has refuted claims that the club has filed a complaint with England’s refereeing organization, PGMOL, regarding the treatment of winger Bukayo Saka.

On Wednesday, reports surfaced suggesting that Arsenal had made a request to the central refereeing body in England, seeking greater protection for Saka. As per The Daily Mail, Arsenal allegedly asked for opponents to be booked following the occurrence of “the first strong foul” on their talented player. However, Arteta has denied these reports.

But Arteta denied that Arsenal had referenced any specific issues in their contact with PGMOL: He told reporters on Friday (via BBC): “That’s daily communication. We have certain topics but nothing specific about that one. I think the referees know the tactics of the opponents and that some players invite more tackles. I think that’s been going on for two years. We have wingers that provoke a lot of fouls and attention. That’s something normal.”

Arteta and Arsenal have attracted attention throughout the season due to their interactions with PGMOL. One notable incident involved Arteta managing to avoid a ban despite openly criticizing referees, a situation that sparked controversy within the Premier League.

Saka is one of the most frequently fouled players in the Premier League this season, but he currently ranks third on the list, trailing behind Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace and Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle.
