Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has provided an update on Christopher Nkunku’s injury status, revealing that the player is still recovering from a knee injury.
Despite suffering a new hip issue, Nkunku is making progress, and his return is anticipated. However, he was unavailable for the FA Cup victory over Preston North End. And his status for the Carabao Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough remains uncertain.
The Argentine was asked if Nkunku had sustained a new issue, and replied: “It’s not related to his old injury, it’s a different problem. A small issue in his hip, not in his knee, we are cautious with him because it is six months from his injury, and he was involved in few games. He won’t be involved tomorrow, we will see for Saturday. We are not sure, we are going to be cautious.”
Asked if he could face a significant layoff, Pochettino replied: “Hope it is not a long period. At the moment he is not training, he is doing recovery. Not a big issue.”
Nkunku has faced injury challenges since joining Chelsea, restricting him to only four appearances for the first team. During that period, he managed to score once in the 2-1 loss to Wolves.
Chelsea will face Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-final, with the first leg scheduled for this week. Following that, they will take on Fulham in a Premier League London derby over the weekend.
