Wolves 3-4 Manchester United: Deadline-day thriller ends with Mainoo’s stunner

Manchester United secured a thrilling 4-3 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to an impressive 97th-minute winner from 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo.

Manchester United managed to scrape out a late 4-3 win against Wolves away from home in a seven-goal thriller. The Red Devils took an impressive lead at Molineux with goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, dominating the first half against a disjointed Wolves side, but ultimately found the contest a lot harder.

Despite United’s first-half dominance, Wolves made a sensational comeback in the second half with goals from Pablo Sarabia, Max Kilman, and Pedro Neto, while Scott McTominay also found the net. However, amid the chaos, Kobbie Mainoo’s late 97th-minute strike secured a vital three points for Manchester United at Molineux.

After a tenses FA Cup fourth-round encounter against League Two Newport County, Manchester United refocused on Premier League affairs with a visit to Molineux. Despite the Red Devils having won their last three meetings with Wolves without conceding, Wolves entered the match undefeated at home in their previous nine matches.

Nevertheless, Gary O’Neil’s team quickly found themselves trailing, jeopardizing their impressive run without a Molineux defeat. Marcus Rashford, making a return to the team amid recent controversies, gave Manchester United the lead within the first five minutes, elegantly guiding Hojlund’s lay-off into the far corner from the edge of the area.

Just as Wolves were beginning to settle, Manchester United delivered a decisive blow at the other end, doubling their lead. Rashford connected with Luke Shaw on the overlap, and the left-back’s cross to the near post fortuitously rebounded off Hojlund, beating Jose Sa in the process.

Manchester United vs Wolves: away win might ease the pressure off ten Hag

Casemiro squandered a golden opportunity moments later, heading wide from a clever free-kick with the goal exposed, while goalscorer Hojlund blocked Matt Doherty’s short back pass, and Sa’s clearance narrowly missed the Dane.

Manchester United continued to bombard the Wolves’ goal before halftime, with Raphael Varane blasting a volley over the crossbar as the hosts were repeatedly exposed. Both Hojlund and Casemiro found the net before the break, but their goals were rightfully disallowed for offside.

The action remained intense after the break, with Bruno Fernandes failing to convert inside the box, and Lisandro Martinez making a goal-line clearance at the other end following some uncertain goalkeeping by Andre Onana from a free-kick.

Hojlund had a chance to score his second of the game ten minutes into the second half, but Sa made a splendid save with his feet to deny the striker. Onana then denied Craig Dawson, with the Wolves player seeing his scuffed shot from close range deflect off the goalkeeper’s head.

Wolves had a fortunate lifeline into the match, as Casemiro fouled on Pedro Neto’s ankle in the box. Substitute Sarabia stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to reduce United’s lead.

However, McTominay quickly restored Manchester United’s advantage, heading home from a corner with his first touch after coming off the bench. Max Kilman bundled home from close range to bring the hosts back into contention, and Neto thought he had secured Wolves a point with a fantastic late strike in stoppage time.

But Manchester United refused to concede without a fight, and it was Mainoo who emerged as their savior. The teenager danced into the penalty area before unleashing a beautifully curled strike to secure the victory for the Red Devils at the last moment.
