Diogo Jota speaks of Liverpool squad’s reaction to Jurgen Klopp bombshell announcement

Diogo Jota has acknowledged that he and his Liverpool teammates were surprised by the announcement that Jurgen Klopp will depart the club at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed last week that he would step down as manager, and his backroom staff will also be leaving, with sporting director Jorg Schmadtke having already departed after the January transfer window.

In his public announcement, Klopp mentioned that he had informed Liverpool’s board of his decision in November. Jota, speaking to A Bola in Portugal, expressed that the players were taken aback by Klopp’s decision.

“It was a shock for everyone, that’s the reality. I don’t think anyone in the dressing room was expecting to hear news like that, especially since this season is going so well,” he said.

“But it’s not up to us to make that decision, just to accept it. It will be a problem later on, knowing who the coach will be next season and so on.

“We still have a lot to fight for this season. So we have to focus on what we have to do on the pitch and also, in a way, make his legacy more colourful with a few trophies. That’s what we want, just as we wanted before he announced his decision, because obviously we always want to win.”

Since recovering from a muscle injury at the end of December, Jota has performed exceptionally well for Liverpool, contributing five goals and three assists in eight games. As Liverpool pursues a farewell Premier League title for Klopp, they are set to face Arsenal on Sunday.

A victory at the Emirates Stadium, coupled with a potential loss for Manchester City against Brentford on Monday night, could see Liverpool extend their lead by eight points at the end of the gameweek.
