Chelsea aims to swiftly replace Mauricio Pochettino with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, facing stiff competition in the process.
After suffering consecutive defeats to Liverpool and, most recently, Wolves, Chelsea has fallen to the 11th position in the Premier League.
The Guardian suggests that Pochettino’s job is not in immediate jeopardy, but Sport Zone reports that the Chelsea hierarchy aims to swiftly replace him with Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.
Reportedly, the former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich star, who guided Werkself to the top of the Bundesliga, has impressed Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Remarkably, Alonso’s team remains undefeated in all competitions as of the beginning of February.
Securing Alonso’s appointment won’t be a simple task. He likely aims to complete a potentially historic season with Leverkusen.
Moreover, with Jurgen Klopp stepping aside at Anfield and Thomas Tuchel’s future at Bayern uncertain, Alonso will have numerous elite suitors in the summer.
There are also speculations about a return to Los Blancos, although Carlo Ancelotti’s recent contract extension adds a layer of complexity to that possibility.
Leverkusen stretched their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga to 20 games with a 2-0 triumph over Darmstadt last Saturday. Despite finishing as runners-up five times, they have never clinched the league title. Following a midweek cup tie, their upcoming match is a highly anticipated showdown as they host title rivals Bayern in a blockbuster clash.
With Alonso appearing to be a challenging target, it’s uncertain whether Chelsea will explore alternative options or give Pochettino more time. The Blues currently trail 14 points behind the top four and are gearing up for a challenging FA Cup fourth-round replay against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
