Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United: Late McTominay winner hinders Villans European chances

Scott McTominay’s 86th-minute header secured a highly impressive victory for Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday.

Manchester United took the lead in the first half through Rasmus Hojlund, who has been in excellent form lately, before Douglas Luiz equalized for Villa after a sustained period of pressure.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the fixture before McTominay, coming off the bench, scored a magnificent winner.

With three consecutive wins in the Premier League, Manchester United has now climbed within just six points of the top four positions.

Manchester United troubled Villa’s defense early on with their pace on the counterattack and their high-pressing game. In the 11th minute, Bruno Fernandes cleverly played a pass to Hojlund after winning possession outside Villa’s box. Although Hojlund controlled the ball well, his shot from inside the area deflected wide of the post.

Just five minutes later, Hojlund found the back of the net. Fernandes delivered a corner kick, and Hojlund expertly volleyed it into the goal from close range.

Aston Villa fought back, with John McGinn and Ollie Watkins forcing Andre Onana into two smart saves in quick succession.

Despite having 60% possession, Aston Villa struggled to break down Manchester United’s solid defense in the first half, managing only three shots on target.

Manchester United’s defensive solidity was briefly tested at the start of the second half when Luke Shaw was replaced by Victor Lindelof due to an injury. Lindelof was almost immediately outplayed by Matty Cash, allowing Cash to deliver a brilliant low cross into the box. Onana saved Watkins’ close-range shot, sparing Lindelof’s blushes.

Villa continued to press forward and eventually found their equalizer through Douglas Luiz after a sustained period of pressure. Moussa Diaby set up Luiz, who tapped in from close range after a melee in the box following a set piece.

Manchester United almost reclaimed the lead when Alejandro Garnacho’s curling effort narrowly missed the target.

In the 86th minute, Manchester United scored the winning goal. Diogo Dalot delivered a superb cross from the right flank, and McTominay, who came on as a substitute, headed home from 10 yards out.
