Kalvin Phillips gets a horrible start to West Ham loan stint with a red card

Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday pundit Mike Dean criticized Kalvin Phillips, labeling the midfielder’s actions as ‘stupid,’ as his dismal start to his West Ham loan stint persisted.

Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips, aged 28, received two yellow cards in quick succession, leading to his dismissal, as the Hammers suffered a 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Dean’s commentary on the incident was harsh and critical.

An exasperated Dean said: “He’s just been cautioned for getting involved with [Nicolas] Dominguez for no reason whatsoever. Then two minutes later he’s just flicked the ball over him has [Morgan] Gibbs-White and he’s just caught him on top of the foot. Stupid, your second yellow card. And he’s just wasting his time playing, he doesn’t even look interested for me.”

Hammers fans expressed their frustrations, with one particularly upset supporter even questioning if Phillips’ loan move could be terminated mid-game.

It has been a rocky beginning to Phillips’ time in east London. Many initially saw him as a valuable winter signing for David Moyes’ team, providing the opportunity for regular game time after leaving Manchester City.

However, errors in his first two outings, including last weekend’s heavy defeat against Arsenal and now a costly sending off, have complicated his hopes of replicating the form that once made him a regular for England.

With Phillips suspended, he will have to watch from the sidelines as West Ham aim to break their winless streak on Monday, February 26, when they visit Brentford. The events at the City Ground on Saturday are likely to intensify fans’ dissatisfaction with Moyes, who has yet to fully win over the West Ham faithful.
