Mikel Arteta has stated that William Saliba is still not fit to play for Arsenal as he recuperates from a back injury he suffered while playing against Sporting CP
Mikel Arteta provided an injury update on Arsenal’s French defender William Saliba, confirming that he is still recovering from a back injury sustained during a match against Sporting CP.
With Arsenal hoping to win their first Premier League title since 2004, having their top players available for the critical phase of the season is essential. However, Saliba has missed several games due to his injury.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s clash with West Ham on Sunday, Arteta confirmed: “William [Saliba] is still not available. He’s progressing well. And we are hopeful we’ll have him available in the next few weeks. but we’ll have to see.”
After picking up a back injury during Arsenal’s Europa League penalties defeat to Sporting CP, Saliba has been out of action for the Gunners’ three recent league games. Despite his absence, Arsenal has managed to secure two wins and a draw.
Arteta confirmed that he is ‘not far’ from getting back onto the grass in training, adding: “Obviously we need to be cautious because of the injury, but he’s evolving well.”
After their elimination from the Europa League, Arsenal can now give their full attention to the remaining eight Premier League games of the season. However, Saliba will not be fit for their upcoming match against West Ham on Sunday. Although his comeback will happen soon.
