Unai Emery: Ollie Watkins should be in England squad for Euro 2024

Unai Emery expressed his support for Ollie Watkins to secure a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad after the striker netted two goals in Aston Villa’s 3-2 victory over Luton.

Ollie Watkins, aged 28, increased his season’s goal tally to 21 across all competitions during Aston Villa’s 3-2 victory at Kenilworth Road. His goals included a header from a Leon Bailey corner and a finish from a quick free-kick taken by Douglas Luiz.

This season marks Watkins’ most prolific in terms of Premier League goals, with 16 strikes in the top flight. Villa’s unexpected surge into contention for Champions League qualification has coincided with his impressive form.

With less than three months until the tournament in Germany, Gareth Southgate faces the task of selecting the forward players to accompany captain Harry Kane. Watkins has emerged as a strong candidate for inclusion.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who was sidelined for the first five months of the season due to a gambling ban, is also being considered for a spot in the squad.

“Every player is showing in their teams their quality, their capacity, their commitment, their performance,” said Emery.

“Then of course, the coach of the national team has to decide. But I think he deserves to be there.”

Watkins and Emery eye Champions League qualification for Villa

A win on Saturday solidified Villa’s position in the top four, with Tottenham trailing by five points. Lucas Digne’s header in the 89th minute secured a thrilling victory against Rob Edwards’ relegation-threatened side.

Earlier in the match, Villa’s lead, established by Watkins in the first half, was nullified by two quick goals from Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris.

However, in the final moments of the game, two substitutes collaborated to secure the win for Emery’s team. Moussa Diaby provided the cross for Digne, who found the net at the far post just when Luton appeared to be gaining the upper hand.

“This is the idea, when you’re taking decisions, trying to make an impact,” said Emery of his late substitutions. “Trying to do something different, with fresh players. They did fantastic.”
