Phil Foden reveals how Guardiola’s tactics won them the Manchester derby

Phil Foden disclosed that Pep Guardiola’s tactical decision to have him switch flanks with Bernardo Silva directly contributed to his second goal in the Manchester derby.

Phil Foden emerged as the hero for Man City on Sunday, securing a crucial victory over Man Utd at the Etihad Stadium with a brace. With this win, City remains just one point behind league leaders Liverpool as the season approaches its climax.

The England international’s two goals completed City’s second-half comeback, with his remarkable strike from 25 yards out equalizing Marcus Rashford’s first-half goal, followed by another goal late in the game, drilling the ball into the bottom corner to put City ahead.

Although his first goal came after cutting in from the right flank, where he initially started the game, Foden’s second goal surprisingly came from the left-hand side of the penalty area.

Foden explains Manchester City’s tactical tweaks

Addressing the press after the victory, Foden confessed that Guardiola had instructed him to exchange positions with Bernardo Silva late in the game—a move that ultimately resulted in the crucial second goal:

“The manager said switch sides with Bernardo [Silva]”, said Foden. “I switched and not long after I managed to score the second goal.

“The manager knows best and I listened to him and it paid off in the end.”

Foden also took the time to express the significance of scoring a brace in the Manchester derby, disclosing:

“I understand what it means for the fans in the derby at the Etihad. It means everything. To score as well is even better but it was about the win today.

“That’s my aim. To turn up in the big games, that’s what I want to do and I think this season I’m proving that by putting performances like that in. So yeah I’ll keep working hard.”
