Gareth Southgate one of the candidates to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

A recent report has identified England manager Gareth Southgate as a potential successor to Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

Following the acquisition of a minority stake in Manchester United by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, there is speculation that Ten Hag may be replaced before the next season begins, as the new owners seek to reshape the team.

While no final decision has been reached regarding Ten Hag’s future, INEOS is exploring various options, with Southgate emerging as one of the potential candidates for the managerial position.

Southgate has previously collaborated with INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and Dan Ashworth, who is a top target for United’s sporting director role. His contract with the England national team runs until the end of 2024, and any decision regarding his future is likely to occur after the upcoming European Championship.

Does Southgate fear managing in United or any other Premier League side?

Despite not having managed a club since his tenure at Middlesbrough ended in 2009, Southgate has emphasized that his time with the England team has equipped him for potential managerial roles in the future.

“I was 35 years old when I managed in the Premier League and we finished 12th and 13th,” he told Sky Sports of his time with Middlesbrough. “I knew nothing like what I know now. There isn’t a job in world football that would intimidate or daunt you, having lived this one.

“I remember talking to Jose [Mourinho] when he was at Man Utd and he said to me: ‘When you’ve done the role you’re in now you’ll be able to do anything really’. I thought that was probably right, but seven years into it it’s definitely right. I’m confident in this role and whatever might be in the future.

“Of course, I’m not going to be here for 20/30 years and I don’t know what the future will be. I’m very calm about that, but I’m not worried about what that might be.”

United are reportedly considering Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton and Thomas Frank from Brentford as potential candidates for the managerial position. However, the club is believed to have a long list of potential targets should they opt to replace Ten Hag.

With managerial vacancies already present at Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona for the upcoming summer, United officials are mindful of the need to be prepared in case they also need to fill a managerial vacancy.
