Michael Edwards close to agreeing to a new contract with Liverpool

Michael Edwards is nearing an agreement with Fenway Sports Group to return to Liverpool in a senior capacity.

In 2022, Edwards stepped down from his role as sporting director after a period of remarkable success, establishing himself as one of the premier recruitment specialists in global football. Although Chelsea sought his immediate return to football that year, Edwards opted for some time away from the game.

According to reports from 90min, Edwards is not interested in resuming his former role as sporting director and has made it clear that he would only consider a higher-level position with greater control over operations.

Liverpool has extended an offer to Edwards, aiming to bring him back to Anfield to oversee the club’s football operations, as reported by The Athletic.

Fenway Group are looking to rebuild Liverpool’s staff

Liverpool is seeking Edwards’ expertise to aid in a staff rebuild, which involves the search for both a new manager and sporting director.

Should Edwards accept the offer, Richard Hughes is likely to assume the role of sporting director. Hughes, who recently announced his departure from Bournemouth, has been in discussions with various clubs but is expected to join Liverpool if given the opportunity to work alongside Edwards, whom he regards as one of the top professionals in his field.

Edwards and Hughes have had a longstanding relationship since their time together at Portsmouth in 2003, and Liverpool and Bournemouth have often engaged in transfer dealings. Players like Jordon Ibe, Brad Smith, and Dominic Solanke moved from Anfield to the Vitality Stadium, while Harry Wilson also made a loan switch.

Liverpool aims to appoint a new sporting director before intensifying their search for a new manager.

Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen is the leading candidate for the managerial position at present, but Liverpool will only initiate formal steps once the new management structure is finalized, after which they may consider alternative options.
