‘We’re Back’ – Erik ten Hag on Manchester United’s Champions League hunt

Erik ten Hag expressed his belief that Manchester United remains in contention for Champions League qualification following their win against Everton on Saturday.

Manchester United secured a 2-0 victory against Everton with first-half penalties converted by Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

Although the performance was not particularly smooth, the win allowed United to reduce the gap with fourth-placed Aston Villa to eight points. Additionally, they are now only three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham, although they have played one more game than Unai Emery’s team and two more games than Spurs.

Securing a top-four finish will guarantee qualification for the expanded Champions League next season, but even finishing fifth might be sufficient.

The United manager told TNT Sports: “It was important. We had to put this right and keep the pressure on the teams above us. There are many games to play. Now we are back. We will keep pressure on them and see what happens.”

Ten Hag also commended Alejandro Garnacho, attributing his role in earning both penalties for United and highlighting his emergence as one of the team’s most impactful attackers.

“He’s progressing very well and we are very pleased with this. His contribution today was huge, his runs, his dribbles. It’s attractive as well for the audience, obviously we want to show something. I think well-deserved penalties,” the manager added.

During the game, Everton managed to take 23 shots on goal, marking the second-highest number of shots any team has attempted in a Premier League match without finding the net. United have now encountered 20 or more shots in five out of their last six Premier League games. Across the season, only Sheffield United have faced more shots than United.
