Pioli praises Milan for a ‘perfect week’ after Monza win

Following their win in the Champions League, Pioli’s men retook the third spot in Serie A by defeating Monza

Pioli was pleased with Milan’s performance after what he called the “perfect week” with the Rossoneri winning at Monza.

Pioli believes Milan regained ‘unity’

Junior Messias’ goal against Monza saw Milan win their third game in the span of just 8 days in what Pioli called a “perfect week”. Milan went seven games without winning one prior to this which left them in fifth place. However, the victory over Monza has shot Pioli’s men to the third spot once again, overtaking Roma and Atalanta.

“It was the perfect week, we can start over from here,” Pioli said at his post-match press conference. “We haven’t even conceded a goal and we’re on the right track.

“We needed to regain unity, the difference now isn’t tactics but the desire we’ve regained to win, to compete for the second balls.

“Monza were brilliant in the second half but we fought until the end and this is important. It’s a shame we didn’t finish the game in the second half.”

Pioli went with a back three defense today which saw Messias and Hernandez in the wingback roles which they both impressed.

“We needed to regain unity

Asked about Milan’s change of system, Pioli said: “We’ll go back to playing with four when we find the right characteristics.

“Malik Thiaw gives us physicality and the possibility of dueling with physical forwards. The other players also have the characteristics to play in a three.”
