Napoli emerged victorious as Victor Osimhen converted a penalty, while Giacomo Raspadori missed his chance, and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia set up Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s goal against Sassuolo.
The Italian champions showcased their skills in front of a packed stadium for their home debut. Kvaratskhelia, who had been sidelined due to muscular problems, returned to the bench.
On the other hand, Sassuolo included Ruan Tressoldi in the lineup after his suspension, but Gregoire Defrel and Filippo Missori were not fully fit. Agustin Alvarez remained a long-term absentee, and Domenico Berardi continued to push for a transfer to Juventus.
In the early stages, Giacomo Raspadori narrowly missed the target with a close-range shot against his former club, after a well-executed move involving Giovanni Di Lorenzo on the right.
Napoli was awarded a penalty after a VAR review. Matteo Politano managed to get the ball ahead of Daniel Boloca. Osimhen calmly scored the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.
Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa posed a threat with two-headed attempts from corner kicks, and Ruan Tressoldi also came close with a free header.
After the break, Osimhen’s header struck the upright from Politano’s cross, and he couldn’t redirect Anguissa’s counter-attack effectively.
The usual Napoli suspects were behind their win against Sassuolo
However, Sassuolo’s Maxime Lopez was shown a red card for persistent protests directed at the referee. Raspadori tested the goalkeeper’s reflexes, and Piotr Zielinski missed the target after a beautiful team play involving four quick passes. Matias Vina nearly scored an own goal while trying to cut Osimhen’s cross for Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
From the resulting corner, a header hit the outstretched arm of Martin Erlic, resulting in another penalty. Osimhen allowed Raspadori to take it against his former club, but the striker’s attempt was way off target, hitting the crossbar.
Kvaratskhelia made his season debut after overcoming muscular issues and swiftly assisted Di Lorenzo to secure Napoli’s second goal, just three minutes after coming off the bench.
Osimhen continued to push for more goals, and his acrobatic header from a Zielinski corner was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper.
