Nigerian government gets involved in the Osimhen debacle

The Nigerian government has expressed its backing for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen following the club’s publication of an offensive TikTok video.

The country’s sports minister, Senator John Owah Enoh, stated on Friday evening in response to the video, which garnered widespread attention earlier this week.

“Over the last weekend, the developments arriving from Naples regarding striker Victor Osimhen made me very sad. My office is working hard to reach Osimhen firsthand and understand what the problems are, to establish the facts clearly,” he said in a statement to The Nation.

Enoh also announced that the government is using ‘diplomatic channels’ and the Nigerian ambassador to Italy to ‘explore the issue.’ He asserted that the government is “committed to ensuring that our athletes are afforded the respect they deserve and that they are not exposed to injustice, discrimination and unfair teasing.”

Napoli uploaded a video on their TikTok account last Wednesday, which made fun of Victor Osimhen for missing a penalty against Bologna.

The video, which has since been removed, received significant attention on social media and caused a rift between Osimhen and the club. After scoring in a subsequent match, the striker refused to celebrate and did not interact with his teammates before a Serie A game against Udinese.

The Italian club has issued an apology, stating in a press release that they did not intend to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, whom they consider a valuable asset to the club.

Osimhen’s agent has threatened legal action against Napoli, and manager Rudi Garcia described the incident as “clumsy behavior” during a press conference.
