USMNT’s Timothy Weah reveals his preferred position

The United States international Timothy Weah has identified his preferred position, although he has yet to play in that role for Serie A giants Juventus.

During the summer, the USMNT star Timothy Weah made the move to Italy, joining his fellow countryman Weston McKennie in Turin. He adapted well to Juventus, but has spent a considerable amount of time on the bench as he has been competing with McKennie for a spot as a right wing-back in Massimiliano Allegri’s strategies.

Timothy Weah considers himself to be more of a forward and has told Gazzetta dello Sport of putting his versatility to good use in Italy: “I’m learning a new role, and this is very important for me. For Juve, I play in a deeper position compared to the national team, but I’m adapting well.

With the USMNT, I play in attacking midfield trio behind the lone striker, with quality players like Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna, a position that I really like. If I had the choice, I would prefer to play on the left with the possibility of cutting to the center and going for the goal. But I understand well what the team needs from me.”

Despite having to play in an unfamiliar role, Weah is relishing his time in Italian football, having previously had stints in France and Scotland with Paris Saint-Germain, Lille, and Celtic.

Timothy Weah added: “I’m very happy at Juventus, it’s fantastic to play alongside players of the highest level at a top club. I’m learning a lot every day in training. I feel really lucky to play at such a renowned club.

I bonded a bit with everyone, but in particular with [Moise] Kean and Pogba. Paul is going through a difficult time, and I often go to his house to make sure he is okay. He’s a great person. [Federico] Chiesa and [Dusan] Vlahovic also helped me a lot. Then of course McKennie was fundamental. He constantly brings positive energy both on and off the pitch.”

Weah is currently on international duty and aims to gain more playing time and earn his 35th cap when the USMNT plays a friendly against Ghana on Tuesday evening.
