Simone Inzaghi, despite a late equalizer, defended his team’s performance, as Inter Milan went without a win in four Serie A games
Inter boss Simone Inzaghi defended his team’s performance, claiming that they deserved better than what their results indicate, following a 1-1 draw with Salernitana, where they were leading 1-0 until the 90th minute before a late equalizer by Antonio Candreva. Robin Gosens had scored in the 6th minute to give Inter the lead.
Candreva delivers heartbreak for Inter
Antonio Candreva, who used to play for Inter, scored a seemingly unintentional goal from the right side that ended up looping into the far corner of the net beyond Andre Onana, leading to a 1-1 draw with Salernitana.
Despite the result, Simone Inzaghi defended his team, however, the team’s winless streak continues and they are currently fourth in Serie A, with Roma in close pursuit.
Inzaghi spoke about the match outcome and reiterated his support for his players, stating that their recent record does not accurately represent the hard work and dedication they have shown.
“The squad puts such an incredible effort in and deserves far more“
“It’s really hard to talk about the football tonight, because we all saw what happened,” he told DAZN.
“The team put in a strong performance, just two days after the game with Juventus. The main regret is that we were unable to score the second goal.
“At this moment, we are really paying a heavy price for not killing off games. The squad puts such an incredible effort in and deserves far more.
“As a coach, I find it difficult to explain how this ended with a draw after everything that we created. There is huge disappointment, but it must help push us on even more for what awaits us in the next few days.”
Inter’s result against Salernitana was not ideal preparation for their upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Benfica. The first leg of the tie will be held in Lisbon on Tuesday. However, Benfica themselves suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Porto on Friday.
