Inter staged a comeback from being 2-1 down to spoil Daniele De Rossi’s perfect record with Roma in this action-packed six-goal showdown. Marcus Thuram netted one and caused an own goal by Angeliño.
Roma, who had won all three matches under De Rossi’s helm post-Jose Mourinho, were boosted by Chris Smalling and Sardar Azmoun’s return to the bench. However, Evan Ndicka remained at AFCON.
Lukaku faced his former teammates, and Dean Huijsen was chosen over Diego Llorente for the Europa League. Simone Inzaghi, serving a touchline ban, had Davide Frattesi, Stefano Sensi, and Juan Cuadrado sidelined due to injuries.
The match kicked off with Stephan El Shaarawy forcing a save from Yann Sommer within the opening 58 seconds. However, Inter controversially took the lead when Francesco Acerbi’s header from a Federico Dimarco corner, flicked on by Lukaku, found the net. Despite VAR reviewing Marcus Thuram’s offside position, the goal stood.
Roma managed to level the score from a set-piece as Lorenzo Pellegrini’s free kick was headed in by Gianluca Mancini. Pellegrini then initiated a counter-attack, leading to El Shaarawy’s scuffed finish that bounced off both posts before going in.
Inter vs Roma: Inzaghi’s men soldier on
Inter equalized after the break, with Matteo Darmian providing a cross from the right for Thuram to tap in at the near post. The Nerazzurri then took the lead when Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross was unintentionally volleyed into the net by Angeliño, attempting to clear Thuram’s effort.
Shortly after, Benjamin Pavard controlled the ball and volleyed it, hitting the base of the upright from a distance.
Both Bryan Cristante and Acerbi exited the field due to muscular issues. However, Lukaku had a golden opportunity to level the score at 3-3 when Pellegrini sent him clear, only for Sommer to deny him with a glove save as he attempted to dribble around the goalkeeper.
Lukaku missed another chance, this time nodding a cross from Leonardo Spinazzola wide. Tommaso Baldanzi hit the side-netting, and Spinazzola tested Sommer with a shot during a late onslaught.
Nevertheless, as Roma committed everything forward, they fell victim to a counter-attack. Marko Arnautovic surged down the right, passed across the box instead of shooting, and Alessandro Bastoni arrived before Alexis Sanchez to slot home.
