Maurizio Sarri resigns as Lazio coach

Maurizio Sarri announced his resignation from Lazio’s managerial position following their elimination from the Champions League last 16 by Bayern Munich last week.

Maurizio Sarri conveyed his decision to the Serie A club on Tuesday afternoon, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, and he stepped down immediately. Lazio surrendered a one-goal lead from the first leg, leading to their exit from the Champions League round of 16 last Tuesday. Harry Kane, England’s captain, played a pivotal role in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 victory on the night, securing a 3-1 aggregate win.

Taking charge in June 2021, Sarri spent nearly the same amount of time at Lazio as he did at Napoli, where he gained prominence between 2015 and 2018, following stints at Chelsea and Juventus, with a brief sabbatical after leaving Juventus. Despite not securing any trophies during his two-and-a-half-year tenure with Lazio, Sarri achieved notable victories in the derby matches and returned the team to Champions League contention.

Although Sarri’s Lazio tenure started impressively, recent months have seen a decline in performance. The loss to Bayern is part of a four-match losing streak across all competitions, with only three wins in 11 matches since mid-January. Currently, Lazio sits in 9th place in Serie A, and despite their struggles, they remain in contention in the Coppa Italia, where they will face Sarri’s former club, Juventus, in the semi-finals.

Considering the ongoing pursuit of silverware, Sarri’s decision to resign comes as a surprise, notwithstanding the team’s underwhelming league position and European exit. It remains uncertain whether Sarri will take a break from coaching or join the growing list of available managers in the summer transfer window. Should Chelsea decide to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino, his former club might consider him as a potential replacement.
