Feyenoord put past seven goals against Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday, with Orkun Kokcu and Oussama Idrissi each scoring a brace
Arne Slot, the head coach of Feyenoord, praised his team’s “unbelievable” finishing skills after their 7-1 thrashing of Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16.
The match was much more one-sided than the previous week’s 1-1 draw, with Santiago Gimenez opening the scoring for the hosts in the ninth minute.
Feyenoord win ‘gives a lot of confidence’ in fight against Ajax
Orkun Kokcu scored two goals before halftime, while Oussama Idrissi replicated the feat in the second half.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Danilo scored two more goals before Kevin Kelsy scored a consolation goal for the Ukrainian visitors, who were eliminated from the tournament.
Reflecting on a memorable result for his side, Slot said: “It was unreal how we put the match to bed so quickly.
“Normally we need more chances to score, so compliments to my players for being so efficient this evening.
“Shakhtar had a good spell in the first half, and you saw how our players blocked their shots in the box. They were so determined to get a good result.”
Feyenoord, who are now unbeaten in 16 matches this year, will face their fierce rivals Ajax in three days.
The victory against Shakhtar came just before the crucial Eredivisie showdown between the two teams on Sunday at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Feyenoord is currently three points ahead of Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie table.
“Of course this victory helps for the duel with Ajax,” Slot said. “This gives a lot of confidence.
“But I also see that Ajax have regained the level they had at the start of the season. Ajax have a good team again.”
