Jurgen Klopp provided an injury update on Alisson and Diogo Jota ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League clash with LASK.
Klopp mentioned that while Alisson’s injury was not as severe as initially feared, the No.1 goalkeeper would still be sidelined for several crucial games. Alisson sustained the injury during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, and Klopp, initially concerned and uncertain about the goalkeeper’s return, provided the update.
Alisson’s return is expected to be sooner than initially feared. However, Klopp expressed a more pessimistic outlook for Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who also sustained an injury during the match against City.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Austrian side LASK, Klopp said: “Both [Alisson and Jota] are out. Ali is a bit less [worrying]. It is day by day. He cannot play tomorrow, not on Sunday, probably not the week after. Not as bad, but bad enough. Diogo should take a little bit longer. We don’t know exactly how long, but it is more severe. We have to see.”
Klopp will probably replace Alisson with Kelleher against LASK
Alisson faces a potentially impactful absence for Liverpool, raising concerns about the team’s pursuit of the title this season.
While there’s a slim hope for his return by the clash against Manchester United on December 17, his injury offers a rare opportunity for Caoimhin Kelleher to showcase his skills in the Premier League.
Kelleher, who has yet to feature in the league for Liverpool, has made three appearances in European competitions. The team’s injury concerns extend with Jota and Alisson joining the absentees list that includes Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, and Andy Robertson.
Liverpool confront LASK on Thursday with the prospect of securing qualification to the Europa League knockout stage with a victory. However, they are likely to miss their primary goalkeeper for upcoming Premier League matches against Fulham, Sheffield United, and Crystal Palace before a potential return in the encounter against United.
