Gasperini unsatisfied with Atalanta’s draw against Sporting CP

Gian Piero Gasperini indicated his satisfaction with Atalanta’s 1-1 draw against Sporting CP in their Europa League Round of 16 clash, expressing his readiness to contend for a victory in the return leg at home.

Atalanta was unfortunate not to secure a win in the Portuguese capital, hitting the woodwork three times during the 90-minute encounter with Sporting on Wednesday. Despite initially trailing due to a goal by Paulinho, they managed to equalize before halftime through Gianluca Scamacca.

The decisive second leg between Atalanta and Sporting will take place in Bergamo next week, following their upcoming fixture against Juventus in Turin. Gasperini’s team currently occupies the sixth position in the league standings, trailing fourth-placed Bologna by five points.

In an interview with Sky Sports Italia via TMW, Gasperini shared his initial thoughts on Atalanta’s 1-1 draw with Sporting.

“Based on the way the match went and the number of chances, we could’ve done better. Some, like hitting the posts, are quite crazy… But the result is still positive, we will play for the victory at home and we will do it in the best way.”

Gasperini also touched on the positive performance of Gianluca Scamacca.

“He was mentally free, he made his plays and he was also unlucky. He played well for the team. If he plays like this there are no problems, he has the numbers. He scored a great goal… The important thing is let him smile, that’s fine.”

Gasperini reveals how recent results have affected Atalanta

Gasperini also talked about if Sporting’s goal was the only mistake made by Atalanta in the match.

“Yes, but it’s the result of many things and it could be remedied in many moments. The pressure we put on helped us, even in front of our goal for example. We went a bit far on their goal, we shouldn’t have allowed them the time to play. We were a little slow, we were far from the goal.”

Gasperini touched on Atalanta’s recent results.

“There are matches like against Milan where the final minutes never pass, in which you defend for a point. And others in which the opponent are in difficulty and you are fine, those you have to win as we tried to do until the end.

“I have a nucleus of players who have the right confidence and personality, then I have more between the flanks and attack who will learn from the older players and then we can win matches.”
