Arsenal star Beth Mead has encouraged Alessia Russo to join the club following Russo’s announcement of her departure from Manchester United.
After Alessia Russo confirmed that she would not renew her contract with Manchester United, Beth Mead, her England teammate, urged Russo to join Arsenal.
The proposed deal at United would have made Russo the highest-paid player at the club, and it is expected that Arsenal would offer her a similar contract if she decides to make the move. Reports suggest that Arsenal is currently leading the pursuit to secure her signature.
Mead wants Russo at Arsenal
Quoted by BBC Sport, Mead was asked about linking up with Russo and said: “I love playing with Alessia at England and I’d love to do so at Arsenal.
“I know Alessia has spoken openly about how much [the speculation over her future] has put on her shoulders right now. As an England team-mate you have got to respect what she wants and try not to put too much pressure on what is happening.
“She has a World Cup to look forward to and hopefully not have too much stress going into that.”
Russo has established herself as a top performer in the Women’s Super League, showcasing her skills by scoring 10 goals in 20 matches for United during the previous season.
Despite her contributions, United fell short by just two points, finishing second behind Chelsea who clinched the championship. On the other hand, Arsenal concluded the season in third place, trailing Chelsea by 11 points in the standings.
Russo has secured her spot in the England squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, while Mead unfortunately did not make the cut due to her injury. The Lionesses are scheduled to begin their tournament with a match against Haiti on July 22, following a warm-up friendly against Portugal on July 1.
