An agreement between Canada Soccer and the women’s side was reached for interim funding over their dispute for equal pay.
Canada Soccer settles with the Women’s side
Canada Women’s side were threatening strikes but they backed a bit following threats of legal action. The women’s side demanded equal pay with the men’s side. They continued to play “under protest” recently. But a breakthrough came when Canada Soccer president Nick Bontis resigned from his post three days ago.
Now Canada Soccer general secretary Earl Cochrane has come out and revealed the reasons behind the arrangement.
“This is about respect, this is about dignity, and this is about equalizing the competitive environment in a world that is fundamentally unequal,” he said.
“We have been consistent and public about the need to have fairness and equal pay be pillars of any new agreements with our players, and we are delivering on that today.
“While this is an important step forward, and it signals progress, there is still more work to do to ensure both of our national programs are given the necessary resources and supports to prepare and compete.”
