Spain 1-0 England: Football is not coming home!

A year after their triumphant Euros, the England Lionesses sought to capture their first-ever World Cup title, but Spain beat them to it!

Spain dashed England’s dream of winning their first World Cup victory in the final match as Olga Carmona’s first-half strike secured a 1-0 win in Sydney.

Sarina Wiegman’s team achieved an all-time best second-place finish, but the Lionesses will find little comfort in this, given that Lauren Hemp‘s near miss in the first half came so close to being the opening goal.

FIFA Best keeper Mary Earps made numerous excellent saves to maintain England’s drive to level the game. Her crucial block prevented Jennifer Hermoso’s second-half penalty kick from finding the net as her resolute teammates endeavored to mount a comeback.

Unfortunately, that comeback never materialized. Despite opportunities, the Lionesses couldn’t breach Spain’s swift defense. Spain held on during 13 minutes of added time to secure a well-deserved first world title.

Wiegman played the same lineup from the squad that defeated Australia 3-1 to advance to this stage for the first time.

Lauren James, making her World Cup debut, had scored thrice and provided an equal number of assists in the group stage. She became available for the England boss after serving a two-match suspension and was introduced as a second-half substitute.
