Jorge Vilda disputes unfair dismissal as Spain head coach

On Tuesday, the Spanish Football Federation announced the immediate sacking of Jorge Vilda, who served as the head coach of the Spain women’s team.

This comes as part of the ongoing aftermath of the kissing scandal linked to the suspended RFEF President Luis Rubiales. Vilda was reportedly one of Rubiales’ most trusted allies within the Federation.

Furthermore, In an interview with El Larguero regarding his dismissal, Vilda expressed his belief that the decision had been severe and lacked justification. He also mentioned that he had not anticipated it.

Jorge Vilda said: “I’m as good as you can be after being world champions. However, I think that I have been dismissed unfairly.

“I didn’t expect the sacking. I had already begun preparing my new ideas for the team and I saw myself with strength and desire to coach the team in the Nations League, and at the Olympic Games next year.”

Vilda also shared his thoughts on the appointment of Montse Tome as his successor. The 41-year-old, who had been Vilda’s assistant for the past three years, has now become the first woman to lead the Spanish national team.

Thus he added: “I have congratulated her and she has the ability to do very well in the role. I have left behind a recognisable style of play and an excellent methodology for her to use. Let her take advantage of it. She has prepared, and she will perform well.”

With Vilda’s dismissal, Spain will undoubtedly undergo a new direction, and he will now commence his search for a new role.
