Arsenal Women make a shock exit out of the Champions League

Champions League mainstays Arsenal were in for a shocker as the Gunners were eliminated from the competition in a penalty shootout.

Paris FC managed to keep Arsenal women from reaching the Champions League group stages after a lengthy clash that ended up with penalty shoot-outs.

Arsenal women’s new signing Alessia Russo entered the match as a substitute against Paris in their first-round qualifying clash, with the score at 2-0 thanks to Mathilde Bourdieu’s brace.

However, the England international cut the deficit in the 80th minute by taking advantage of an error and sending a shot past the keeper.

Russo’s goal ignited a remarkable comeback for the Gunners, as Jen Beattie equalized in the 96th minute during extra time. Despite Paris FC adding a third goal, Russo once again responded by scoring just four minutes before the end of extra time.

Arsenal lost the shootout 4-2, resulting in their elimination from the competition. Heartbreakingly, Russo was one of the players who missed her penalty, along with Frida Maanum.

Arsenal has been a consistent presence in the Champions League in recent seasons, reaching the semi-finals in 2022/23 and even defeating 2021/22 winners Lyon 5-0 in the group stages.

They also reached the quarter-finals in the previous season. Therefore, their elimination before reaching the group stages comes as a significant surprise. Paris FC’s last deep run in the tournament was in 2012/13 when they reached the semi-finals.
