Chelsea coach Emma Hayes would have ‘heart attack within five years’ if she hadn’t undergone surgery

Chelsea women’s coach Emma Hayes has revealed that she would ‘have a heart-attack’ if she hadn’t undergone surgery.

In October 2022, Hayes announced that she should undergo an emergency hysterectomy following her battle with endometriosis. She missed six Chelsea games.

Hayes has now revealed that the doctors told her that she would suffer from a stress-induced heart attack within five years if she refused to undergo surgery.

Hayes in her audiobook, Kill the Unicorn, which was released recently, revealed her conversation with Liverpool manager Matt Beard in the tunnel at Prenton Park before her team’s first match of the previous season against Liverpool.

She told Beard: “I don’t want to go out there.”

After this conversation, Beard organised for a bed to be put in a private room, so Hayes could rest.

The 46-year-old Hayes admits she spent the entire second half doing nothing despite knowing Chelsea needed a goal.

“All I could think was, ‘I’m going to lose more than this game if I’m not careful’.”

Chelsea will start their Women’s Super League season on October 2 against Tottenham Hotspur. Hayes has guided Chelsea to six Super League titles.
