Spain’s former boss Jorge Vilda becomes Morocco women’s national team manager

World Cup-winning head coach Jorge Vilda has assumed the role of the new head coach of the Morocco women’s national team, just one month after being removed from his position as Spain’s manager.

Vilda was at the helm when Spain claimed the World Cup title on August 20, but he was relieved of his duties by September 6.

Despite being under investigation in connection with the criminal case involving former RFEF president Luis Rubiales, who faces charges of sexual assault and coercion, Vilda secured his new position.

When Vilda was dismissed, issues between Spanish players and the RFEF had been ongoing for over a year. Spanish players and staff had previously resigned in protest due to a non-consensual kiss by Rubiales on Jenni Hermoso.

He initially refused to step down and promised Vilda an attractive new contract, failing to accept any wrongdoing despite his ongoing criminal prosecution in Spain. Vilda is presently under investigation in connection with the alleged coercion aspect of the case against his former boss.

Spain’s players only returned to the national team camp last month on the condition that their demands for broader changes within the RFEF were met.

The RFEF had initially supported Rubiales, threatened Hermoso with legal action for speaking out, and later issued a public apology to the footballing community.

Vilda will now lead Morocco, which created history as the first Arab nation to qualify for the Women’s World Cup. The 42-year-old takes over from Reynald Pedros, who had been in charge since 2021.

Morocco, featuring Tottenham winger Rosella Ayane as a key player, finished as runners-up to South Africa at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and is set to host that tournament in 2024.
