Ex-Bacelona head coach Lluis Cortes turned down Morocco job before Jorge Vilda took over

In a show of solidarity with Spain’s Jenni Hermoso, former Barcelona head coach Lluis Cortes refused Morocco’s offer as he became aware of Vilda’s involvement.

Lluis Cortes allegedly turned down an opportunity to assume the role of Morocco’s new women’s head coach upon learning that Jorge Vilda was somehow in the project.

Jorge Vilda, the former manager of the Spain national team, became Morocco’s new head coach. Merely 16 days after being terminated following Spain’s World Cup victory.

Vilda was dismissed due to the controversy surrounding Luis Rubiales, who had embraced and kissed captain Hermoso after the final.

Nevertheless, he is now gearing up for a fresh challenge with the Moroccan national team, who made their debut at the 2023 World Cup and advanced to the last-16 stage in Australia and New Zealand.

COPE reports that Cortes received the job offer before Vilda. However, upon learning that the former Spain manager would be overseeing the nation’s youth teams at the suggestion of the RFEF, he decided to terminate the negotiations.

Cortes, who guided Barcelona to an historic treble in 2021, has refused to associate himself with Vilda “on principle,” particularly following the incident involving his former player Hermoso.

After Cortes rejected the offer, the Moroccan federation appointed the World Cup-winning manager to the position. Vilda takes over from Reynald Pedros, who had been in charge since 2021.
