Vivianne Miedema rejoices coming back from injury to be a ‘proper footballer again’

Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema returned to play in her team’s victory over Bristol City, marking her comeback after a 310-day absence due to an ACL injury.

During Arsenal’s 2-1 Women’s Super League (WSL) victory against Bristol City on Sunday, Vivianne Miedema made her comeback by coming on as a substitute during stoppage time.

This marked her first appearance in almost a year since sustaining an ACL injury in December. Miedema later expressed her emotions about returning to the pitch through social media after the match.

“I’m a proper footballer again. The last 310 days have been an emotional and physical rollercoaster,” she wrote on X. “You never really understand what rehab/coming back means until you go through it. From the initial sadness and anger when getting injured, to the anxiety and being scared for surgery and your rehab.

“For me it was difficult to trust my body and feel confident again. But after multiple setbacks and comebacks, I finally started to feel excited and confident and I can enjoy being back out there again.

Vivianne Miedema writes a heartfelt letter to her fans

“Sometimes we do things on auto pilot, everything becomes normal and we won’t appreciate the moments we should.

“The one thing I learned in this rehab is that I do need to enjoy milestones, special moments and even little steps a lot more. It’s like I’ve never been away.”

Vivianne Miedema was one of four Arsenal players who suffered ACL injuries last season, along with Beth Mead, Leah Williamson, and Laura Wienroither. While Mead had already made her return to action, Williamson and Wienroither have begun running again as part of their ongoing rehabilitation.

Unfortunately, frequent ACL injuries continue to be a significant concern in women’s football. Just this season, Manchester United players Emma Watson, Gabby George, and Jess Simpson (on loan at Bristol City) have all suffered ACL injuries.

As for Vivianne Miedema, the 27-year-old will gradually work on regaining her match fitness, and she will face a busy November with Arsenal, including four Women’s Super League (WSL) games and two matches in the Conti Cup group stage.
