USWNT veteran Becky Sauerbrunn shoots down retirement talks

At 38, Becky Sauerbrunn remains determined to keep competing and will strive to secure her place on the team.

Her international future has come under scrutiny, especially in the lead-up to two international friendlies against Colombia, after she missed the 2023 World Cup due to injury.

Sauerbrunn has already returned from the injury that kept her out during the summer tournament and has participated in her club side Portland Thorns’ last four matches, contributing to their advancement to the NWSL playoffs’ semifinals with an automatic first-round bye.

“I would say that my role on the team is the same that it’s been for the last 13 years,” Sauerbrunn told ProSoccerWire. “I’m competing for a spot on the roster, and then I’m competing for minutes on the field. And that has not changed and it won’t change even with a new coach coming in, who I hope will give me a chance.

“If I am not a starter, then I’m going to push the starters to be the best that they can be. And if I’m just not on the team, then there it is. But I’m definitely going to keep competing and hope that things go the right way for me.”

Becky Sauerbrunn wants a place on USWNT roster

In preparation for her upcoming semifinal playoff match with the Thorns in November, Sauerbrunn emphasized that she maintains a dedicated focus on both the USWNT and her club. She expressed her comfort with this mindset.

“You really do want to be in both places, you want to be preparing… I want to be preparing with Portland in order to get ready for Gotham, but you also want to be here obviously. And so you just have to focus on where you are at the time. And so when I’m with the women’s national team, I’m with them and when I’m with Portland, I’m with them.”

Sauerbrunn is one of several veteran USWNT stars facing uncertainty about their future with the squad, particularly with rumors of a new coaching appointment expected by the end of the year.

Her international career includes over 200 caps, and she has enjoyed a remarkable journey on the global stage, securing two FIFA World Cups, an Olympic Gold medal, and finishing as runners-up in another World Cup.
