Chelsea’s Niamh Charles calls for more diversity in the England squad

Chelsea defender Niamh Charles has expressed her concerns about the lack of diversity within the Lionesses squad.

Charles has openly discussed the issue, acknowledging the existing problems while expressing optimism that efforts are there to tackle the issue. During the Women’s World Cup, England had only two players who were non-white in their squad. Currently, the call-up for the Nations League fixtures includes only three players from mixed ethnic backgrounds.

Charles’ remarks shed light on the need for greater diversity and representation within the Lionesses squad, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address these issues and foster progress in this area.

Niamh Charles thinks Lionesses will be more inclusive in the future

“I think, right now, you’ve kind of seen it at the top, but when you look at times gone by, yes we’ve probably not had the access in place and we’ve probably failed at some point,” she told reporters.

“But I think right now the things that have been put in place, you might not see them right now, the progress, but I do believe that there are things in place that – in the future, hopefully – [mean] it’ll be more representative of the society we live in. I have hope that, for … the clubs across the country, in terms of access at grassroots level, hopefully showing that first-team level, hopefully it [will] be more representative in the future.”

The issue of diversity has come into focus once more following Arsenal’s release of a team photo that highlighted the absence of any black or ethnic minority players in their squad. In response to this, the club issued a statement acknowledging the lack of diversity within their current women’s first-team squad.

They recognized that this does not align with the diversity that exists both within the club and the communities they represent. Arsenal has committed to actively promoting greater inclusion and diversity within their squad moving forward.
