An unusual computer error prevented Spain veteran Irene Paredes from achieving her 100th international appearance against Switzerland on Tuesday.
In the Women’s Nations League match, Spain coach Montse Tome confirmed that the 32-year-old defender Irene Paredes should have started in La Roja’s 7-1 victory over Switzerland, which would have been a significant milestone in her international career. However, Tome attributed Irene Paredes’ exclusion to a computer glitch, clarifying that it was not the player’s fault.
“There was some kind of computer problem, I was told about it at the hotel,” Tome explained in a press conference. “I had to adapt to the situation and I went with the starting 11 that you saw.”
Two goals from two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas contributed to Spain’s comfortable victory, and Aitana Bonmati, the 2023 award recipient, also played a part in the win against Switzerland. Spain’s next match is scheduled against Italy on December 1.
