Leah Williamson sent an emotional tweet to Beth Mead after Mead scored a brace to secure her first goals in the Women’s Super League in over a year.
After enduring an ACL injury approximately a year ago, Beth Mead marked her return by scoring her first goals. In the eighteenth minute, she curled in a shot to extend her team’s advantage, and four minutes before halftime, she added a second goal from close range, making it 3-0.
Leah Williamson, Mead’s teammate at both Arsenal and England, conveyed a message to her on Twitter after the match. Mead was informed by the Arsenal captain that her performance would have been appreciated by her mother.
In January of this year, Mead experienced the loss of her mother, who succumbed to cancer. Additionally, Mead opened up about her battle with depression following her mother’s passing and the challenges of being unable to play due to her injury earlier this month.
Returning from an 11-month injury absence, Mead received her first call-up for England on Monday. Despite headlining the Lionesses in their Euros victory last year, she missed their journey to the final in the Women’s World Cup in Australia.
Meanwhile, Williamson, who is out due to injury and won’t return until 2024, will not be participating. Mead, on the other hand, will join Arsenal as they aim to narrow the three-point gap to leaders Chelsea in the Women’s Super League. The opportunity to close this gap will present itself when they host Chelsea on December 10.
