Alexia Putellas withdrew from the Spain national squad, citing a knee injury that will sideline her for the Nations League games against Italy and Sweden.
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas was unable to participate in practice on Monday due to a left knee injury sustained two weeks ago during Barcelona’s 5-0 Champions League victory against Benfica. The Spanish Football Federation stated that Putellas will now focus on continuing her recovery process with her club.
The statement released by the Spanish federation read: “Alexia Putellas will leave this afternoon the camp of the Spanish National Team after tests carried out by the medical services of the team. After studying her injury, the FC Barcelona player will return home to continue her recovery.
“Montse Tome summoned a total of 25 players, so Alexia’s discard does not involve quoting another footballer to cover her discharge in the current camp.”
Alexia Putellas, who had previously been sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, missed the 2022 European Championship but recovered in time to contribute to Spain’s victory in the World Cup earlier this year.
With nearly 100 caps for her nation, Putellas will be absent from Spain’s upcoming Nations League matches against Sweden on Tuesday and Italy on Friday due to her knee injury. Despite her absence, Spain currently leads their group by five points.
