Chelsea has confirmed that a foot injury has ruled Sam Kerr out of Australia’s international fixtures against Canada.
Despite featuring for Chelsea in last week’s Women’s Champions League match against Paris FC and their Women’s Super League win over Leicester on Sunday, the Matildas will have to face Canada in two international friendlies on Saturday and Wednesday, December 6 without their star forward, who has been struggling with a foot injury.
Chelsea’s statement reads: “We can today confirm that Chelsea striker Sam Kerr will not feature in Australia’s forthcoming international fixtures and will remain with the club for treatment on a foot injury. The 30-year-old has withdrawn from the Matildas squad and will not feature in their upcoming international friendly double-header against Canada in Victoria and Vancouver respectively. Sam will remain with Chelsea and undergo further assessment from the club’s medical department during this period.”
Despite scoring a hat-trick against Paris FC last week and being in excellent form for the Blues, Kerr has been playing at 80 percent of her normal level, as stated by coach Emma Hayes. The Australia captain, who recently admitted to suffering two calf injuries around the World Cup, has been grappling with injuries throughout the year.
A timeframe for Sam Kerr’s return to action has not been specified by Chelsea. The Blues aim to reintegrate her into the starting XI for the crucial Women’s Super League match against Arsenal, with the reigning champions holding a three-point lead over the Gunners in the table.
