England midfielder Ella Toone praised the fighting spirit in the squad after a dramatic 3-2 victory against the Netherlands.
England came from two goals down to beat the Netherlands on Friday thanks to Ella Toone’s stoppage-time winner. The Lionesses kept their Olympic dreams alive with this victory.
It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet but the main thing for us is that we won and we did that,” said Toone.
“I wish we could play here every time, I love it here. I love playing for England and playing football. It was really special to get on the scoresheet at Wembley, but the main thing was that we won.
“It [the crowd] was really loud we didn’t have time to celebrate as we wanted to get another goal but it was amazing.
“My role was to come on and affect the game. What a ball from LJ [Lauren James], we showed a lot of character to come back and win the game.
“It was all a bit of blur [what Sarina said to her before coming on] but it was about winning the ball and attacking. The subs that we made really did that. It was a great comeback to come back from 2-0 down at half time and we have shown we can win that game.”
Toone: I thought we played really well
England will face Scotland in their final group-stage game at Hampden Park on Tuesday. The Lionesses must win the match and also better the Netherlands’ result against Belgium, if they want to qualify for the Nations League finals.
“I thought we played really well tonight we still dominated the game and it was two errors from us that led to the goals but the character from the team was huge,” she added.
“The game [against Scotland] is massive but every game we play in is huge. we’ve got the targets on our back. but we love playing for England and we’ll go out fighting to get the win.”
