Keira Walsh claims Mary Earps is well past her mistake against the Netherlands

Mary Earps has rebounded from her mistake for England against the Netherlands, and according to Keira Walsh, she is now “making jokes about it.”

Manchester United goalkeeper Earps expressed that she felt she had let her team down after allowing a shot from Lineth Beerensteyn to slip under her body and score during a crucial Nations League match at Wembley.

In the absence of Millie Bright, Mary Earps was given the captain’s armband for the Lionesses and was visibly upset at leaving her teammates facing a difficult challenge in a match they ultimately won 3-2.

England coach Sarina Wiegman has voiced her support for Earps, and Keira Walsh mentions that her international teammate, who saved a penalty in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, is now able to find humor in this rare mistake.

Walsh told reporters ahead of a meeting with Scotland on Tuesday: “Mary has saved us so many times…even me in the World Cup final… She was making jokes about it [the mistake] this morning at breakfast.”

England still has a chance to qualify for the 2023-24 Nations League finals, but their fate depends on the outcomes in Group A1, where the Netherlands, currently topping the table, are set to face Belgium. Additionally, the Lionesses are facing uncertainty about their place in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, raising concerns that Team GB might miss out on participation in that prestigious event.
